Gerry Anderson
Gerald "Gerry" Anderson , MBE (actually Gerald Alexander Abrahams, born April 14, 1929 in West Hampstead , London , England ; † December 26, 2012 ) was a British puppet artist and filmmaker.
Life
Anderson comes from a Jewish family whose roots lay in the Polish-Russian border area. He grew up in north London and after completing his military service in the Royal Air Force, he started a small film production company for commercials.
Together with his wife Sylvia Anderson , Anderson later made a name for himself in science fiction and special effects. The Supermarionation technology was developed by them.
The television series UFO and Thunderbirds were among the Andersons' greatest successes . The pilot episode Trapped In The Sky lasted an hour and ITC Entertainment's boss Lew Grade was so enthusiastic about the story that he commissioned Gerry Anderson to expand all episodes from the originally planned 25 minutes to an hour.
