Erasmus Sartorius

Erasmus Sartorius (* 1577 in Schleswig ; † October 17, 1637 in Hamburg ) was a German composer , organist , music writer and poet .

Life

Erasmus Sartorius attended Latin school in his hometown. Because he was a good singer, he became a member of the Kapelle am Hof ​​in Gottorf Castle when he was ten . After studying theology at the University of Rostock , he first became organist in Bordesholm , then cantor at St. Marienkirche in Rostock. In 1604 he became vicar at the Hamburg Cathedral . In 1605 he became cantor at the Johanneum and director of music . From 1628 he was also cantor at the cathedral.

In 1609, Sartorius performed the first passion music with singers in the Gertrudenkapelle , thus establishing a Hamburg tradition that lasted until Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke at the beginning of the 19th century.

A street in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel is named after Sartorius .
