Life
Erasmus Sartorius attended Latin school in his hometown. Because he was a good singer, he became a member of the Kapelle am Hof in Gottorf Castle when he was ten . After studying theology at the University of Rostock , he first became organist in Bordesholm , then cantor at St. Marienkirche in Rostock. In 1604 he became vicar at the Hamburg Cathedral . In 1605 he became cantor at the Johanneum and director of music . From 1628 he was also cantor at the cathedral.
In 1609, Sartorius performed the first passion music with singers in the Gertrudenkapelle , thus establishing a Hamburg tradition that lasted until Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke at the beginning of the 19th century.
