A Flock of Seagulls is a British new wave band that was founded in 1979 in Liverpool under the name Tontrix . The biggest hits in Germany were I Ran (1982), Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You) (1983) and The More You Live, The More You Love (1984).
history
1979–1981: The founding phase
A Flock of Seagulls were formed around Mike Score and his brother Ali in 1979 in Liverpool . Mike Score, a trained hairdresser, played keyboard and guitar and sang. His brother Ali played the drums and a barber friend, Frank Maudsley, took over the bass . In the meantime, Mark Edmondson played the drums, his friend Paul Reynolds then joined the band at the age of 17 after guitarist Willie Woo left the band unannounced in the middle of a series of planned performances. The band kept writing songs and touring clubs looking for a record deal. Finally, in the spring of 1981, they released their debut EP Modern Love Is Automatic / Telecommunication . While the EP didn't make it into the charts, the theme song Telecommunication became an underground hit in the new wave clubs.
1981–1984: The successes
In late 1981 the band signed a contract with the big label Jive Records , and their debut album A Flock of Seagulls was released in the spring of 1982. I Ran (So Far Away) was released as the first single. MTV liked the video, which contained long takes of Mike Score with his extravagant hairstyle. Due to the large presence on MTV, the single climbed into the US top ten in the summer of 1982 and tore the album with it in the charts. In Great Britain I Ran did not even make it into the top 40, but in the same year Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You) , the first pre-release from the second album, reached Lists , there No. 10. In 1983 Lists became and released other singles from it, all with moderate success. The third album The Story of a Young Heart , released in 1984, was also moderately successful, but without producing the big hit single. The highest ranking was achieved by the first single The More You Live, the More You Love (26th in Great Britain).
1984–1986: The disintegration
After the album, Reynolds left the band and was replaced by Gary Steadman; keyboardist Chris Chryssaphis also joined them. The new formation released the more poppy album Dream Come True in 1986 , which could no longer build on the old successes. Shortly thereafter, the band disintegrated.
1989 until today
In 1989 Mike Score formed a new band under the name A Flock of Seagulls and since then has been touring with a changing line-up.
In 1995 a new album called The Light at the End of the World was released.
In November 2003, A Flock Of Seagulls appeared in the original line-up (Mike and Ali Score, Paul Reynolds and Frank Maudsley) on the music channel VH1 as part of the series Bands Reunited . In September 2004 the four gave a few more concerts in the United States , but immediately went their own way again.
Mike Score has been on tour again with a new line-up since 2005. In September 2009 the formation gave five concerts in Germany, where not only some new songs but also the old hits were played. A Flock of Seagulls announced a comeback with the original line-up on YouTube in May 2018 . It was also announced that Mike Score, Ali Score, Frank Maudsley and Paul Reynolds are working together on a new album.
background
