I Ran (So Far Away) (often abbreviated as I Ran) is a 1982 song by A Flock of Seagulls , written by Mike Score, Ali Score, Frank Maudsley and Paul Reynolds. It appeared on the self-titled album and was produced by Mike Howlett .

history

In an interview, Mike Score gave two reasons for inspiration to write the song. The members of A Flock of Seagulls often visited Eric's Club in Liverpool , where one of the bands performing there previously sang a song called I Ran . Score thereby found a basis for the refrain. For the rest, the thought came through a poster from Zoo Records. The band consulted the record label about a record deal and also used the poster as a model for the cover of their first album.

I Ran (So Far Away) was recorded at Battery Studios, London . It corresponds to the genres of synthpop , new wave and post-punk . According to the sheet music, the song moves at a tempo of 145 BPM. With a chord progression from AGAG and FGA in the choruses, the song is written in A minor. At the intro of the song and the musical interludes, short guitar riffs are played that give the impression of an echo. Guitarist Paul Reynolds joined the band when the song was being composed, adding a few guitar riffs afterwards for Reynolds to play. The song is about a man who has fallen in love with a woman and tries to resist the feelings. He also sees a polar light in the sky and aliens abduct his lover.

It was released on March 26, 1982, and I Ran (So Far Away) became a number one hit in Australia. In the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City , the song can be heard on the radio station Wave 103 .
