Lifts the Titanic is an American feature film from 1980 that, despite the high-profile cast, was a financial failure. The film was directed by Jerry Jameson . The script is based on the thriller of the same name by Clive Cussler .
action
It's the late 1970s. The Cold War serves as the backdrop for the plot. A group of American scientists, on behalf of the American government, wants to secure a shipment of the very rare mineral byzanium , which is required for the construction of a laser shield around the USA.
After some lengthy research, the adventurer Dirk Pitt discovered that there was a sufficient quantity on board the Titanic , the mysterious, sunken passenger liner .
With great material expenditure and the loss of a deep-sea search boat and its crew, it was finally possible to bring the Titanic , which was stuck in the mud, to the surface of the water, only to find that there were only stones in the watertight vault. So the search for the Byzanium continues. Pitt and Seagram ultimately find it in an English cemetery, but decide not to reveal the location to the government.
reception
The filming of this film took place at a time when the wreck of the Titanic was still undiscovered at the bottom of the North Atlantic, which gave rise to speculation that the former pride of the White Star Line with regard to the depths of the sea and the low oxygen content there was still in could be in good condition. Based on this knowledge, it is therefore possible in the film to salvage the Titanic in one piece. Through the expeditions of Jean-Louis Michel and Robert Ballard in 1985 and 1986, however, the breakup of the ship, described by several witnesses of the sinking, but previously not proven, was confirmed; salvage of the Titanic, which is approaching its final decay, is therefore not practically feasible.
With this international box office flop, the producer Lord Lew Grade experienced the greatest disaster of his career as a film producer.
Others
The shooting took place in the "Rinella Movie Studios" on Malta , using a large water tank in which - once flooded - overwater scenes could be filmed against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea.
The exterior shots at the end of the film (when the upscale Titanic is towed into port) were made on the passenger ship Athinai , the former Santa Rosa , which was laid up off Piraeus at the time , so that the shooting had to take place there.
In 2005 another Clive Cussler novel was filmed: Sahara - Adventure in the Desert with Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt in the leading role. This film adaptation was far better received by the audience and critics. After the negative experience with Hebt the Titanic , Cussler had insisted on influencing the script and the selection of actors.
criticism
“ Raise the Titanic is almost a good movie. He has some wonderful moments, but they sink into the morass of two insane subplots ... "
