Brian Johnson (special effects artist)
Brian Johnson , born Brian Johncock (born September 1939 in Surrey , England ) is a British special effects artist . He received in 1980 for Alien - The sinister creature from another world the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects and 1981 for The Empire Strikes Back the Academy Award for Special Achievement Award .
Life
His first job was at the Cement and Concrete Research Association in Wexham Springs. In 1957 he took a position at the special effects company Anglo Scottish Pictures in Shepperton , which the special effects artist Les Bowie offered him. He then did his military service in the Royal Air Force , where he worked on instrument landing systems. After completing his military service, he met Les Bowie again and worked for him as a special effects technician on the films The Day the Earth caught Fire and The Riddle of the Eerie Mask .
He then moved to AP Films , where he was involved in British television series such as Supercar and Thunderbirds . After that, in 2001: A Space Odyssey, he was responsible for the models of the lunar base. He then went back to Gerry Anderson's film company AP Films to work on films such as The Day After Tomorrow - Into Infinity and the television series Moon Base Alpha 1 . While filming the television series Moon Base Alpha 1, Brian Johnson received a visit from George Lucas . He was very impressed with Brian Johnson's work and wanted to recruit him for Star Wars . Due to his contractual obligations with Gerry Anderson, it was only with The Empire Strikes Back to work with George Lucas.
In 1979 he was involved in the science fiction film Alien , for which he received an Oscar in 1980 in the field of best visual effects . The following year he got his second Oscar for The Empire Strikes Back in the Special Achievement Award category . In 1982 he was nominated for a third Oscar for The Dragon Slayer , but did not receive the award that year. In the following years he worked on many other well-known films such as The Neverending Story , Aliens - The Return and Dragonheart .
