Bandits on the Moon (Original title: Moon Zero Two ) is a British science fiction film from 1969 directed by Roy Ward Baker . The script is based on a story by Gavin Lyall, Frank Hardman and Martin Davison.

The moon is colonized in 2021. Bill Kemp and his partner Karminski land their spaceship at the Moon City spaceport. Kemp meets Clementine Taplin, a young woman who is looking for her brother Wally. Wally took part in a mining expedition to the far side of the moon and is believed to be lost.

Police chief Liz Murphy tells Kemp that he will not be able to start again until his spaceship is repaired. Kemp meets the millionaire Hubbard, who makes him an offer. He wants to buy him a new spaceship. In return, Kemp intended for him an asteroid from sapphire bring to the lunar surface. Kemp agrees and can take the asteroid to lunar orbit with belts. After the mission, he agrees to help Clementine. Both go to the mine on the back of the moon. They discover Wally's body, discover that he has been murdered and are attacked by some men shortly afterwards. The men work for Hubbard. Kemp and Clementine can escape to Moon City and inform the police chief about Hubbard's machinations.

Hubbard shows up shortly afterwards, kills Murphy and forces Kemp to drop the sapphire asteroid into Wally's mine. Kemp and Karminski fly to the asteroid with Clementine Hubbard and his men. There, Kemp gets Hubbard to have his men examine the surface of the asteroid. When the men are on the asteroid, Kemp and Karminski, with the help of Clementine, bring it to a crash in Wally's mine, killing Hubbard and his people.

The film premiered in October 1969, three months after the real moon landings. In Germany it first appeared in cinemas on January 23, 1970. The budget for the Hammer production is estimated at around two million US dollars. The title song was sung by Julie Tippetts , who at that time still sang under her maiden name Driscoll . The visual effects were created by the later Oscar winner Les Bowie ( Superman ).
