Roy Ward Baker

Roy Ward Baker (born December 19, 1916 in London , † October 5, 2010 in London ) was a British film director and film producer .

Life

As a teenager, Baker worked as a tea boy for Gainsborough Studios in London and worked his way up to assistant director in the years that followed, including in the 1930s with Alfred Hitchcock . During World War II he worked with Eric Ambler in the Army Cinematograph Unit ; afterwards they made Baker's first film, The October Man, together . Initially working as Roy Baker , he added his middle name Ward from the mid-1960s to avoid confusion with a British film editor .

In the 1960s and 1970s, Baker directed a number of horror films , mostly from Hammer Studios . He also worked as a television director; Among other things, he shot 18 episodes of the series Simon Templar ( The Saint , 1963-68), eight episodes of Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone ( The Avengers , 1965-68) and four episodes of the series Die 2 ( The Persuaders!, 1971 / 72). Some of these television works were shown in double episodes in German cinemas. 1992 Baker withdrew from the active film business.
