Crypt of the Vampires is a 1970s British horror film directed by Roy Ward Baker and based on the novel Carmilla, the female vampire by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu . This hammer film is the first part of the so-called Karnstein trilogy , the other parts of which are the films Only Vampires kiss bloody (Lust for a Vampire) and Dracula's witch hunt (Twins of Evil) . The first performance in Germany took place on May 24, 1973.
action
The Steiermark in the early 19th century: General of Spieldorf and his family take Marcilla in custody. Laura, the general's niece, befriends Marcilla. Soon Laura is haunted by nightmares, eventually she gets sick and dies. Marcilla leaves the general's house.
Marcilla is now called Carmilla and this time is taken in by Mr. Morton. Carmilla befriends his daughter Emma. Emma also complains of nightmares, and two small wounds are discovered on her chest. While the educator Mademoiselle Perrodot becomes Carmilla's playmate, several young women die in the area. The house butler and a doctor grow suspicious. The whole time a man in black is watching the action with a smile.
The butler suspects the teacher to be a vampire. Carmilla manages to persuade him to remove the garlic he has surrounded Emma with. Then he is killed by Carmilla. She goes to Emma to escape with her. The educator asks to be taken along. Carmilla kills her too in front of the terrified Emma. Carl, Emma's young admirer, saves her by holding an improvised cross in front of him, which drives Carmilla to flight. Carmilla hides in the ruins of her family palace.
General von Spielsdorf reached the ruins together with Baron von Hartog. Hartog is a merciless vampire hunter who wants to avenge the death of his sister. The men find Carmilla's grave, which is inside with open eyes. The baron hits her heart with a stake and decapitates her. A portrait on the wall previously showing a pretty young Carmilla turns into a picture with a skeleton.
Reviews
"Horror as usual, but this time in lesbian."
"The most revealing film adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanus' vampire novel" Carmilla "relies less on horror than on pompous lesbian scenes."
