action

The successful English horror novel writer Lestrange is in Austria doing research for a new book. In a small village he hears about the story of the Karnsteins, an old noble family that died out over a hundred years ago and who are said to have been vampires.

His curiosity is awakened and he pays a visit to the ruined Karnstein Castle. There he is surprised by several attractive young women. But these are not vampires, but students from a secondary school for girls who went on an excursion to the castle with their teacher , the dubious Mr. Barton. Since Lestrange has an eye for pretty young women, he quickly applies himself as a teacher at Miss Simpsons School. At the same time a new student is accepted. Mircalla, the niece of Countess Herritzen. With the arrival of the lovely young Mircalla, a whole series of strange events begins. Some of the students disappear without a trace. Miss Simpson tries to cover this up because she fears a scandal that could damage the reputation of her school. Mr. Barton pokes around Mircalla all the time during the day and broods over strange old books at night. When he was found dead one day, the doctor diagnosed the Countess Herritzen, who happened to be present, with death from heart failure. However, he does not say a word about the two small wounds on Barton's carotid artery.

Lestrange, passionately in love with Mircalla, begins to investigate as all events seem to be related to her and the ruins of Karnstein Castle. To his great astonishment, he finds out that Mircalla is actually the revived Carmilla Karnstein, who died over a hundred years ago. Countess Herritzen, her aunt, and her personal physician are actually Count and Countess Karnstein, who want to rebuild the old reign of terror of the von Karnstein with her. The rumors of the missing schoolgirls have now reached the village. The people fear the return of the Karnsteins and, under the leadership of a recently arrived bishop, form an angry mob with the aim of destroying the vampires once and for all. You set out for Karnstein Castle and set it on fire. Lestrange, who is still passionately in love with Mircalla, wants to save her and storms into the blazing castle. Mircalla, or Carmilla, loves him too and wants to send him away. Count Karnstein, however, orders her to bite him. At the last moment a burning beam falls down and pierces her heart.

Mircalla is dead, Lestrange barely escapes the flames and the return of the Karnsteins has been foiled. However, the count and the countess are not destroyed, since fire cannot harm a vampire.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international films : “ A young writer falls in love with the descendant of an old vampire family. Relatively cautiously staged horror entertainment with some typical sex interludes without any special showmanship. "
  • The lexicon of horror films is of the opinion that the director created " a carefully staged little vampire film that relies more on well-built female bodies than too crude horror effects ". Donald J. Mayerson of Cue Magazine is also quoted as saying : “ Of course it contains all the components that make a vampire film, but they also knew how to cleverly integrate lesbianism into the plot. "And the film service :" (Jimmy Sangster) stages the Dracula saga as a tragic love story. Acceptable entertainment for friends of the genre. "

Others

  • Originally Terence Fisher was supposed to direct Only Vampire Kiss Bloody , but due to a last- minute change in the production phase, Jimmy Sangster was hired.
  • Peter Cushing was actually intended for the male lead. He refused, however, because his wife's health was already very poor at that time. Ralph Bates took on the role at short notice.
