life and career

Valentine Dyall was born as the son of the British film and stage actor Franklin Dyall (1874-1950). He followed his father's profession and began his career in the theater in the 1930s, where he played particularly often in Shakespeare plays. In the 1940s, he took on his first film roles, he had supporting roles in the British film classics Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Heinrich V (1944) and Encounter (1945). At the same time, Dyall took over the moderation of the long-running BBC radio play series Appointment with Fear , in which horror stories were played. Dyall was predestined for such tasks, as he had a deep, creepy-sounding voice that often put him in rogue roles. The voice brought Dyall, especially in later years, many arrangements for horror films , which were often lurid or cheap. Probably the best known and most renowned horror film with Lyell in a supporting role is Until the Blood Freezes with Julie Harris , which was made in 1963 under the direction of Robert Wise . In 1960 he also played alongside Christopher Lee in City of the Dead . In addition to his film career, Dyall could still be seen in London as a stage actor and even played leading roles there.

Dyall has also appeared regularly on British television since the 1950s. So he played the role of Dr. Livesley in two TV series from Treasure Island . In the 1970s he had a recurring role as Dr. Keldermans on the BBC television series Secret Army . From 1979 to 1982 Livesley was a regular on Doctor Who in the role of the Black Guardian , a personification of chaos and evil. Dyall remained active as an actor until his death in 1985 at the age of 77, and overall he had a busy film and television career of over 40 years, even if he had never played leading roles.

Dyall was married three times and had three children. A son of his was the costume degsiner Christian Dyall (1944-1998).
