action
England in 1795. Catherine marries the landlord Charles Fenzüge, whose family is under a curse, but of which she has no idea. Since a mysterious incident on their wedding night, Catherine has felt threatened by a severed hand. She tries her family lawyer and the housekeeper, but they both die under strange circumstances. When Catherine becomes pregnant, her mental state deteriorates. She thinks she has been raped by a ghost. When asked by the family doctor, Charles admits that the house is under a curse.
criticism
The lexicon of international film was well-disposed: “An atmospherically coherent, subtle horror film that primarily relies on mysterious-irrational shuddering, not on fashionable brutal effects.” Cavett Binion described the film for “Rovi” as creepy and atmospherically successful.
