Douglas Gamley

Douglas Gamley (born September 13, 1924 in Melbourne , Australia - † February 5, 1998 ) was an Australian film composer , pianist , conductor and arranger .

Life

Douglas Gamley, who studied under Waldemar Seidel, a pianist and music teacher in his hometown Melbourne, worked as a conductor, arranger and composer in the British film industry from 1956. He delivered one of his early work as a composer for the adventure film playing with fire ( Fire Down Below , 1957) with Robert Mitchum , Rita Hayworth and Jack Lemmon in the lead roles. For productions with big stars like this, however, Gamley was rarely hired. He often composed for small productions from the horror and thriller genre, including films such as Tales from the Crypt ( Tales from the Crypt , 1972) and Das Schreckenshaus des Dr. Death ( Madhouse , 1974). For the British horror film Asylum (1972), he adapted Mussorgski's Pictures at an Exhibition (1874) as an orchestral version and his symphonic poem A Night on the Bald Mountain (1867).

During the 1950s and 1960s, Gamley also wrote production music for the BBC , some compositions of which were later used in the television series Doctor Who . In 1975 he became the conductor of his first and only Oscar nomination in the category Best Original Score for Stanley Donen The Little Prince ( The Little Prince ). From 1976 he worked with his compatriot Richard Bonynge as musical director at the Vancouver Opera . For many years he then worked as a conductor and arranger for the Australian Pops Orchestra. For the film Tron (1982) produced by Disney , he conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1983 he retired into private life. He died in 1998 at the age of 73.
