Temptation to 809 (Original title: Don't Bother to Knock ) is an American thriller in the style of film noir from 1952.
action
Eddie, an elevator operator, gives his niece Nell a job as a babysitter. She is supposed to look after the daughter of a wealthy family for a few hours. Nell, who has only been in New York for a few days, gets bored quickly, tries on the child's mother's clothes and jewelry and indulges in daydreams.
Pilot Jed Towers is in the same hotel. He wants to speak to the nightclub singer Lyn, who has left him. But Lyn doesn't want to hear from him anymore, and Jed gets drunk. Across the street in the window of room 809 he sees Nell dancing and calls her. This invites him for a drink. He soon realizes that Nell is insane and that she was recently released from a mental institution. Since the flirtation in Nell tears open old wounds, she wants to protect herself, gets out of balance and plays with the idea of killing the child. Jed takes care of her and thereby regains Lyn's love.
background
- The plot of the film is limited to the hotel and its guests and takes place in real time .
- Anne Bancroft got her first film role in Temptation on 809 . During the shooting, the production company 20th Century Fox requested the change of its name because Bancroft's original last name Italiano could be detrimental to her or the film.
- The German dubbing version from 1953 with Marilyn Monroe's regular German voice Margot Leonard is missing (the negative was destroyed in a fire), so the film was set to music for the German DVD release in 2000. In this version, Marina Krogull speaks for Marilyn Monroe.
Reviews
Bosley Crowther reviewed the film on July 19, 1952 in the New York Times . He was convinced that Marilyn Monroe still needed some practice to play serious roles and to come to believable acting expression.
"... Acting and staging solid psychodrama, but that is oversimplified to be convincing."
