Lionel Newman

Lionel Newman (born January 14, 1916 in New Haven , Connecticut , † February 3, 1989 in Los Angeles , California ) was an Oscar- winning American film composer , music director and conductor . He was the brother of the film composer Alfred Newman and the uncle of Randy Newman , David Newman and Thomas Newman .

Life

Newman grew up as one of ten children of a Russian immigrant family. At the age of 16 he moved to Hollywood where he got a job as a conductor at Earl Carroll's theater. While working there, he met the theater owner's niece Beverly Carroll, who later became his wife. In the 1930s he accompanied Mae West as a pianist during their performances. In 1939, he headed for the Gary Cooper - Western My husband, the cowboy when his brother Alfred worked as a film composer, the title song " The Cowboy and the Lady in". For this title he received his first Oscar nomination in 1939; and the soundtrack of his brother was nominated.

After a successful internship, he got a job at 20th Century Fox in 1943 and worked there with his brother Alfred. His first film work was the uncredited composition of additional music for the film Immortal Sergeant in the same year. He then worked as a conductor and music director on films such as The Kiss of Death , I Was a Male War Bride and Three Returned Home . In 1959 he was appointed music director of the television division of 20th Century Fox and oversaw the television series Time Tunnel , Lost in Space , Batman and The Seaview - In a Secret Mission , among others . He later headed Fox's entire music division as Senior Vice President. Up until his retirement in 1985, Newman had worked for 20th Century Fox for a total of 46 years and worked on over 200 films as a music director, composer or conductor. As Music Director he stood among others John Williams in Star Wars - Trilogy and Jerry Goldsmith for Star Trek: The Motion ago. In total, Newman was nominated eleven times for an Oscar. When he was last nominated in 1969, he received the award for Hello, Dolly .

Newman suffered cardiac arrest in 1989 and passed away. He left behind his wife and three daughters.
