The story of the Donahue family of artists is told: At the time of the Depression in the USA, the Donahues felt the effects of the economic crisis, as fewer and fewer people wanted to spend money on entertainment. You have to fight hard to find engagements. When Tim, one of the Donahues' children, grows up, he falls in love with Vicky, who works as a cloakroom girl in a nightclub and also performs there. After several complications - Steve becomes a priest, Tim disappears from the hospital after a car accident - the family members meet at a concert and spontaneously perform with five people. Then follows (in the film) a number for six, with Vicky.
background
- The famous final song by Irving Berlin There’s No Business Like Show Business , which became an evergreen , originally comes from the musical Annie Get Your Gun from 1946. In the film, Marilyn Monroe can be seen singing on the screen. On the film LP , however, her voice was replaced by that of Dolores Gray because Monroe was under contract with another record company.
- Musical advisor Hal Schaefer was found unconscious during filming . He tried to kill himself with an overdose of amphetamines and nembutal dissolved in a special solution for cleaning typewriters. The reason for the suicide attempt was unclear .
- Actually, Monroe did not want to act in this film, because she was supposed to be a showgirl again, as she preferred blondes in her previous films , How do you catch a millionaire? and river of no return . She was then persuaded by Fox Studios to accept the role and was promised that she would play in the next film The Itchy 7th Year , directed by Billy Wilder .
- The film was released in German cinemas in an abridged version. Marilyn Monroe is dubbed in the German version by her standard voice Margot Leonard .

Reviews
"Undemanding, but pleasant entertainment."
“Marilyn Monroe, who drives Donald out of show business and into uniform, has three songs to sing and performs them in her trademark seductive way (...) The cast is great (...) " There's No Business Like Show Business "is a great revue film full of colors and melodies. Quite simply a lot of wonderful emotionalism. "
