Miles White

Miles White (born July 27, 1914 in Oakland , California , † February 17, 2000 in New York City , New York ) was an award-winning American costume designer in film and theater. He was best known for his work for the films of the 1950s such as The Greatest Show in the World , Rhythm in Blood or Around the World in 80 Days .

life and work

Miles White, born in Oakland, California in 1914, first studied at the University of California, Berkeley , when he could not find a job in Hollywood during the 1930s , he went to New York on Broadway . There he made his debut as a costume designer in the play Right This Way in 1938. Even during the Second World War , he continued to make a career in the entertainment industry. He designed imaginative costumes for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus , and also worked as a costume designer for the theater and later also for the film industry. In the early 1940s, he made the costume designs for Broadway musicals by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein . In the early 1950s, he won two Tony Awards for his theater work . In 1951 for the play Bless You All and 1953 for the stage performance of Hazel Flagg . He was also nominated for the Tony several times in his career.

For the director Norman Z. McLeod he provided the drafts for the Danny Kaye musical The Hero of the Day in 1946 . In the 1950s, he was nominated three times for an Oscar for his work . 1953 for the circus film The Greatest Show in the World by director Cecil B. DeMille , 1955 for the musical Rhythm in the Blood by Walter Lang and 1957 for the literary film around the world in 80 days by director Michael Anderson based on the bestseller of the same name by Jules Verne .

Miles White died on February 17, 2000 in New York City at the age of 85.
