William Travilla

William Jack Travilla (born March 22, 1920 in Los Angeles , † November 2, 1990 ibid) was one of the most famous costume designers for film, theater and television in Hollywood under the name Travilla .

life and work

William Travilla came to Hollywood in 1942 and initially worked in B-films . He later designed costumes for major film productions and won an Oscar in 1949 for The Love Adventures of Don Juan, with Errol Flynn in the lead role. In 1951 he made the costumes for The Day the Earth Stood Still .

Travilla later worked primarily for the 20th Century Fox film studio and was responsible for the dressing room for Marilyn Monroe in eight of her films. These included the famous white dress from the movie The 7th Year Itch, which was blown up a subway shaft in New York and preferred the pink dress made of blondes that Monroe wore to the song Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend . Working on the Monroe Films How do you get a millionaire? and rhythm in the blood earned Travilla more Oscar nominations. Other films for which Travilla designed the costumes were Fritz Lang's Der Held von Mindanao in 1950 and Elia Kazan's Viva Zapata in 1952 ! or Edward Dmytryk's The Left Hand of God from 1955. In 1964, he received another Oscar nomination for The Lost Rose .

From the late 1970s, Travilla worked mainly for television productions. In the 1980s he designed the costumes for well-known television series such as The Thorn Birds and Dallas and received several Emmy Awards and nominations.
