The American Agnes Newton Keith is married to the British Harry Keith. You have lived with your son on the island of Borneo for years . The story begins in 1940. Agnes is the only American woman in Borneo. Since the beginning of the Second World War , the population has been waiting for a Japanese invasion . When the news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor arrives, the wait becomes unbearable. Five weeks after the attack, the battle for Borneo begins. Agnes and her family are now finally trapped. The Japanese take the island, and Agnes is separated from her husband and taken to a prison camp for women and children with their son George. Now four years of desperation begin, in which Agnes takes care of the other prisoners, constantly threatened by her Japanese guards. Only Colonel Suga treats her with respect, even though he receives news that his entire family has been killed in American bombing in their home country.

The film was based on the autobiography of Agnes Newton Keith . Nunnally Johnson wrote the script based on this biography and produced the film for 20th Century Fox . The outdoor shots for the film were shot in Sandakan , Malaysia .
