The white-legged langur ( Presbytis siamensis ) is a species of primate belonging to the slender monkey group (Presbytini).

features

The fur of these primates is gray or brownish on the back and white or light gray on the belly. The name-giving characteristic are the whitish or light gray hind legs; the hands and feet and the tail are blackish. The face is characterized by light hair on the cheeks and a light ring around the eyes, and there is often a mop of hair on the head. Like all boned langurs, they are relatively small, slender primates with a long tail.

Distribution and way of life

Distribution area of the white-legged langur.
brown - P. s. siamensis
green - P. s. cana
yellow - P. s. paenulata
blue - P. s. rhionis

White-legged langurs live on the Malay Peninsula - but not in the extreme south - as well as on the island of Sumatra . Here they inhabit the central and eastern parts as well as some of the offshore Riau Islands . Forests are their habitat.

Little is known about the way of life, presumably it corresponds to that of the other cap langurs. As a result, they are diurnal and mostly live in trees, where they jump or move on all fours. They live in harem groups, which are composed of a male and several females and young animals. These primates are herbivores that feed primarily on young leaves and fruits.

Systematics

Systematically, the white-leg langur was long considered conspecific with the Banded Surili , today it is usually regarded as a separate species. The populations of the Natuna Islands are now also considered a separate species ( Natuna Langur ). There are four subspecies: P. s. siamensis on the Malay Peninsula, P. s. cana from the eastern Central Sumatra between Siak and Indragiri and from Kundur , P. s. paenulata from eastern Central Sumatra northwest of the Rokan and P. s. rhionis from Bintan (possibly also on Batam and Galang ). Between the distribution areas of P. s. cana and P. s. paenulata lives the East Sumatran banded langur ( Presbytis percura ).
