The Siak ( Indonesian Sungai Siak , German "River Siak") is a river in Indonesia in the east of the island of Sumatra in the province of Riau .
The Siak flows through the provincial capital Pekanbaru , through Buatan and Siak Sri Indrapura, to flow into the sea on the Strait of Malacca at Padang Island .
In the past, the river was lined with peat forests , which were cut down for the construction of palm oil plantations. The peat is washed into the river by the rain, which means that the water in the estuary and the offshore coastal waters is acidic and contains too little oxygen. The regular fish deaths can probably be attributed to it.
