A settlement had existed on this site since the 17th century, and in the late 19th century it grew into a city with a coffee trade and coal industry . In 1939 oil was discovered near the city , which is a driving force behind the economic development of Pekanbaru.
The streets here are remarkably wide. The city is one of the cleanest in Indonesia and received the “Adipura” award (“Clean City”) in 2006 and 2007. In the dry season, the city often suffers from smoke from forest fires that break out in the surrounding area.
Pekanbaru is an important point of entry for tourists coming from Singapore. Popular markets are the Pasar Pusat (food) as well as Pasar Bawah and Pasar Tengeh (Chinese goods). The Great Mosque An-Nur , the Alam Mayang fish ponds , the Sang Nila Utama Museum , the Riau Cultural Park, the Princess Kaca Mayang Garden, the Soeman HS Library and the Sari Dam are of great tourist interest . Pekanbaru has developed into a center of Malay culture, and a Malay cultural festival has been celebrated since 2004.
