A Ship Is Born is a 1942 American documentary film. The United States Merchant Marine , which helped create it, was nominated for an Oscar for the film.
content
The film begins with a pan over the shipyard in Port Hueneme , California and shows men building ships. Finished ships are in the port. Big cranes are busy moving parts. It tells what is needed to build a ship and you can find out where the countless individual parts that you need come from and where the finished ships are going.
The young men who have been recruited by the merchant navy take their place on a ship after receiving their assigned paraphernalia. You will be welcomed and briefed on a large scale. Your training consists of a theoretical and a practical part (tying a sailor's knot, memorizing ranks, practicing shooting at the command post, but also cooking and baking). In their cubicles the men talk about home and things that move them, and in between they start a song. After they have completed their basic training, they go with their duffel bags on a ship that is ready to sail. The American flag is hoisted and everyone salutes.
Working together on board, such as scrubbing the deck, works better with singing and of course you have fun every now and then. The tasks that arise on the ship are presented and their importance in this difficult time is emphasized. The film underlines the national character of the expanding American merchant navy.
In the shipyard, too, work has to run around the clock.
