The Cowboy and the Lady is the theme song from the film of the same name, German title Mein Mann, der Cowboy . In the film, the song composed by Lionel Newman and written by Arthur Quenzer is sung by some cowboys in a restaurant.

At the Academy Awards in 1939 it was nominated in the "Best Song" category, but had to admit defeat by Ralph Raingers and Leo Robin's song Thanks for the Memory from the film The Big Broadcast of 1938 .

Lionel Newman's brother, the composer Alfred Newman was in the category of best original score for the film The Cowboy and the Lady also nominated for an Oscar. However, the award went to Erich Wolfgang Korngold and the film Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds . Quenzer was also nominated in 1939 for the song Merrily We Live from the film of the same name, German title How we live happily! .

In 1981, John Denver was on the US Billboard charts for seven weeks with the song .

Country singer Jason Aldean recorded the song as well as other artists .
