Bletchley is a place that belongs to the "New City" of Milton Keynes and is administered by the Borough of Milton Keynes . Until 1997 it was a town in the county of Buckinghamshire , from which Milton Keynes was spun off as a separate municipality. Bletchley itself is divided into the sub-parishes of Bletchley and Fenny Stratford and West Bletchley. A total of 33,950 people live there (as of 2005).

Bletchley is first mentioned as Blechelai in the 12th century . Located on Roman Watling Street , the town owes its rise to industrialization when a railway junction was built in Bletchley, which was served by the London and Northwestern Railway and the Oxford - Cambridge route. Today Bletchley Station is one of five stations in the Milton Keynes metropolitan area. In addition, Bletchley in Fenny Stratford has a connection to the English canal network through the Grand Union Canal, which runs there . In Victorian times , Bletchley merged with neighboring Fenny Stratford; The united parish had been called Bletchley since 1911.

During the Second World War , the Bletchley Park country estate in Bletchley housed the GC&CS (Abbreviation for Government Code and Cypher School ) from 1939 onwards . It was a code name for the cryptanalytic center of the British secret service (also known as Station X ), which successfully deciphered the ENIGMA , the rotor key machine that was used in communications by the German military during World War II . Until 1973 the office was subject to military secrecy. After its abolition, the achievements made there during the World War (including by Alan Turing ) became known, which is why the name Bletchley outside England is mainly associated with Bletchley Park today. Today there is a museum there.

While the population was still 5,500 in 1921, it rose to 17,000 by 1961, especially after the Second World War, mainly due to immigrants from London. Another boost came in 1967 with the decision to make Milton Keynes a “New City” as a planned city , in which Bletchley was to function as a shopping area. This is how the Brunel Shopping Center came into being in the early 1970s, although competition arose with the opening of the Central Milton Keynes Shopping Center in Milton Keynes city center in 1979. In addition, a new industrial park was created in the Denbigh district in which numerous companies have settled; In addition to Marshall , a manufacturer of amplifiers, there is a Wal-Mart supermarket and an IKEA branch. Denbigh is also home to the Milton Keynes Dons football club .

A popular destination in Bletchley is the Blue Lagoon, a nature reserve around a deep blue lake.

The organist Christopher Herrick (* 1942) and the athlete Derek Redmond (* 1965) as well as the Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek from 2005 to 2010 come from Bletchley .
