Florence Eldridge (born September 5, 1901 in Brooklyn , New York City , † August 1, 1988 in Long Beach , California ; actually: Florence McKechnie ) was an American actress . She was one of America's most celebrated theater actresses, but she also made an impact in the 1930s and 1940s with appearances in motion pictures, often alongside her husband, Fredric March .

biography

Florence Eldridge made her Broadway debut in 1918 and made her breakthrough in 1922 in the lead role in the melodrama The Cat and the Canary . A year later she made her first film with the comedy Six Cylinder Love . In 1926, during a theater tour, she met her colleague Fredric March, who was at a similar early stage in his career. The two married in 1927.

While Fredric March would eventually become one of Hollywood's greatest stars , Florence Eldridge played primarily supporting roles in film and focused on theater. The couple appeared together in seven films between 1929 and 1960 in front of the camera, for example in a film adaptation of the novel Die Elenden with Florence Eldridge as "Fantine" in 1935 ; In 1936 she played in Mary of Scotland , the Queen Elizabeth , 1949 in Christopher Columbus Queen Isabella and 1960 in Inherit the Wind Who she was finally in the movie March's wife.
