James Noble

James Noble (born December 16, 1785 in Berryville , Clarke County , Virginia , †  February 26, 1831 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . He was one of the first two US Senators for the state of Indiana after it joined the Union.

Life

James Noble's parents moved their son to Kentucky in 1795 , where the family settled in Campbell County . He later studied law there and worked as a lawyer after being admitted to the bar. In 1808 he settled in Brookville , Indiana . Noble operated a ferry there and also worked as a judge. He also took part in 1816 as a representative of Franklin County in a convention at which the constitution for the future state was drafted.

In 1816, Noble was elected to the first Indiana House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . His term of office did not last long there, however, as he moved into Congress in Washington on December 11 of this year as one of the first two US Senators of the new state alongside Waller Taylor . He was confirmed twice in office and was, among other things, chairman of the pension committee in the Senate. After the dissolution of the Democratic Republicans , he moved to the National Republican Party .

During his third term in office, James Noble died in Washington in February 1831, where he was buried in the congressional cemetery. The Noble County , Indiana is named after him.
