Ferrourbano Córdoba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ferrourbano Córdoba is a light rail in the Argentine city of Córdoba . It is served by diesel- powered railcars .

history

As early as 1958, the plan to use the tracks in the urban area of Cordoba for a light rail system was discussed for the first time. In 1977, the de facto mayor Alejandro Olmedo, appointed by the military government of the process of national reorganization (1976 to 1983), started talks with the state railway company Ferrocarriles Argentinos in order to use the track system by the city government. The end of the military dictatorship in 1983 delayed the implementation of the plans for the first time. In 1988 Ramón Mestre, the then mayor of Córdoba, resumed the project. This was followed by feasibility studies on the economic viability of the system, which turned out to be a given, as well as the transfer of the tracks to a public company controlled by the city government, Ferrourbanos SA , which was supposed to take over the operation. In 1991 the Ferrourbano was on the verge of realization when a public tender was announced. Mestre's successor Rubén Martí, however, suspended the implementation of the project.

Only on the initiative of the government of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and the mayor of Córdoba from 2007, Daniel Giacomino , was the project relaunched. Work on the repair of the train, which was initially limited to the renovation of the tracks, began in December 2008. In order to achieve the goal of completing the first section before the congressional elections on June 28, 2009 , construction activities initially concentrated on the section between the Estación Belgrano in the Alta Córdoba district and the Rodríguez del Busto train station in the north-west of the city, which is already used by the Tren de las Sierras . In May 2009 the construction of the second line to the Estación Miter and the trial activities on the already in good condition Miter – Ferreyra and Miter – Flores lines began.

The inauguration of the first line took place on June 18, 2009. The first 30 days after the inauguration the use of the train was free of charge. However, an accident in August 2009 resulted in operations being suspended for about four weeks because, in Ferrocentral's view, the safety of operations was not guaranteed. In September operations were resumed with a greatly reduced frequency as a feeder to the Tren de las Sierras . A full-fledged light rail operation is dependent on the relocation of a slum area, which was also only finally decided in September 2009, which is located on the edge of the train route and in which the accident took place.

Route network

The Ferrourbano runs on the existing rails of the Ferrocarril General Bartolomé Miter ( broad gauge ) and Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano ( narrow gauge ) railways . The long unused railways of the Belgrano Railway had to be renewed, while the Miter Railway was already in operation for freight traffic and two medium and long-distance routes and therefore the construction activities there were limited to the construction of the new level crossings that had hardly been maintained until then.

The central hub of the planned route network is the Estación Miter , the largest train station in the central area of Córdoba. Furthermore, since January 2009 the Belgrano station in the Alta Córdoba district has been restored, the end point of the first inaugurated line.

Operation suspended

  • Estación Belgrano (Alta Córdoba) - Rodríguez del Busto (suspended after safety problems on the route in 2012)

Construction / preparations started

  • Estación Belgrano - Estación Miter (central long-distance train station): Construction advanced, but stopped due to a land conflict
  • Estación Miter - Ferreyra: preparations started in 2009
  • Estaciőn Miter - Estación Flores: Preparations started in 2009

In planning

A network of suburban trains called Ferro Metropolitano is also planned , which will connect to the routes that are already under construction. Routes to the suburbs of Montecristo , Jesús María and Río Segundo are planned , in which rail lines also already exist, but which are in need of renovation.
