Córdoba – Cruz del Eje railway line

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Córdoba-Cruz del Eje railway connects Córdoba and Cruz del Eje in central Argentina . The route runs through the Punilla Valley . Part of the route has been operated by the Ferrocentral company since August 2007 as a tourist-oriented local train under the name "Tren de las Sierras" (Spanish train in the Sierren or freely translated train in the mountains ). The rest of the route is closed.

history

The line between Córdoba and Cruz del Eje was inaugurated in 1892 by an English company. In 1909 it was taken over by the state.

Until 1980 the line was operated by the state railway company Ferrocarriles Argentinos as a freight and passenger line, but then closed. After the railway network was privatized, a private company called Aero Ruta was commissioned to operate it. In 1993 the line was inaugurated again, but now as a tourist train called Tren de las Sierras , which only ran a few times a week. Since the company did not meet the conditions imposed on it by the provincial government (repair of the railroad, increase in frequencies) by 2001, the company was revoked its license.

After the line had been idle for years under the influence of the Argentina crisis , its reactivation was announced in February 2007, but this time not as a pure tourist train, but at the same time as a suburban train for Cordoba, with several frequencies per day. Construction began in May of that year at an estimated cost of AR $ 100 million .

Scheduled operations began on August 15, 2007 on the first section between Córdoba and La Calera. The second stage to San Roque should originally be completed by November of that year, the third to Capilla del Monte by January and the last to Cruz del Eje by mid-2008. However, the work was delayed significantly. The second section to Cosquín was only released for scheduled operation at the beginning of July 2008 . The Tren de las Sierras has started at Belgrano train station in the Alta Córdoba district since June 2009 .
