Location of Cruz del Eje

Cruz del Eje is a city in the northwest of the province of Cordoba in central Argentina . The city, which is mainly known for its olive cultivation , has around 30,000 inhabitants and is therefore the economic center of the region.

history

The area, long home to the Comechingones , was settled by Europeans around the middle of the 18th century. In 1856 the city and department were founded. In 1890 the railway reached the place, which led to a strong development spurt.

economy

Cruz del Eje is almost entirely dependent on olive growing and the associated edible oil industry. There is also some animal husbandry, viticulture and mining (especially quarries). It continued to be an important railway junction with important workshops until the 1970s, when the Córdoba – Cruz del Eje railway was shut down. The route, known as Tren de las Sierras since the 1990s , is currently being renewed. Completion, which was originally expected for 2009, has been delayed; the line is currently only in operation between Córdoba and Cosquín . The closure led to a severe economic decline, so there are a large number of slums ( villas miseria ) for a city of this size .

10 km south is the Cruz del Eje reservoir , which is one of the largest in the province, but plays only a minor role in the region's electricity generation.
