Estancia Jesús María (2007)

Jesús María is a city in central Argentina . It is the capital of the Colón department in the north of the province of Córdoba and has 31,602 inhabitants. Together with the neighboring town of Colonia Caroya in the south-west and the rapidly growing Sinsacate , it forms a small agglomeration with 40,631 inhabitants (data: 2001 census by INDEC ).

history

Jesús María developed from an estancia that was established in the area from 1576 and was mainly devoted to viticulture. It belonged to the Jesuits from 1618 until they were expelled in 1767. The lagrimilla , the first American wine to reach the Spanish royal family, came from this estancia. The buildings are just like the Estancia in the neighboring Colonia Caroya and together with other monuments in and around Cordoba since 2000 on the World Heritage of UNESCO .

The actual place was only created in 1873 , when the then owner Pio León gave a railway company permission to build the line between Córdoba and San Miguel de Tucumán through his lands , and therefore built the place at this point.

geography

The city is located about 45 kilometers north of the provincial capital Córdoba in a gently undulating plain that is part of the Gran Chaco landscape . Only a few remnants of the original dry forest landscape remain in the region due to the high level of agricultural activity. The climate is subtropical with warm, humid summers and very mild, dry winters.

economy

The economy of Jesús María is characterized by agriculture, livestock and industrial food production. The suburb Colonia Caroya is best known for its salami and wine specialties .

tourism

In Jesús María the Festival de Doma y Folklore takes place, which is dedicated to folklore music and the preparation of unridden horses, the so-called doma. It takes place in a specially equipped stadium and is one of the largest folklore festivals in Argentina. In Colonia Caroya, the carnival and the salami festival are major attractions .
