Frederick Van Nuys (born April 16, 1874 in Falmouth , Rush County , Indiana , †  January 25, 1944 in Vienna , Virginia ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Indiana in the US Senate .

After attending public schools, Frederick Van Nuys graduated from Earlham College in Richmond in 1898 ; two years later, the law exam followed at the Law School of Indiana University in Indianapolis . Also in 1900 he was admitted to the bar, after which he began to practice as a lawyer in Shelbyville . A little later he moved to Anderson .

From 1906 to 1910 Van Nuys was a prosecutor in Madison County . He held his first political office from 1913 to 1916 as a member of the Indiana Senate ; In 1915 he was President pro tempore of the Chamber of Parliament. From 1916 he lived in Indianapolis. From 1920 to 1922 he served as the federal attorney for the Indiana District Court. In this role he succeeded Lemuel Ertus Slack .

Eventually, Frederick Van Nuys was elected US Senator in 1932, defeating longtime Republican incumbent James Eli Watson . He took up his mandate from March 4, 1933 and was confirmed after six years in office. From 1941 he was chairman of the judicial committee . Before the end of his second term, Van Nuys died on a farm in Virginia in January 1944.
