Aurélio da Paz dos Reis (born July 28, 1862 in Porto , Portugal ; † September 18, 1931 ibid) was a Portuguese plant breeder , photographer , film pioneer and film director . The film history of Portugal begins with him .

Paz dos Reis was born in Porto in 1862 and was a plant breeder and entrepreneur. He owned a palace on Rua de Nova Sintra, 125 with a horticultural business and a large garden, from which he also supplied his flower and seed shop "A Flora Portuense" on Praça de D. Pedro, later Praça da Liberdade.

Later he was a revolutionary and had republican ideas.

In 1896 he bought Portugal's first cinematograph in Paris and made 33 short films . The first of his short films was titled Manobras de Bombeiros (in English: "Firefighters in action").

In 1897 he visited Rio de Janeiro , where he presented his cinematograph and his films, but without much success.

Paz dos Reis died in Porto on September 18, 1931 at the age of 69.
