The Plaza de Toros de Ronda is a bullring in Ronda ; it is considered to be one of the oldest and one of the most beautiful of its kind. The circular and in many ways well thought-out facility is a model for most bullring in the world. It is open to visitors every day, except on bullfighting days.

history

The Plaza de Toros de Ronda was built between 1783 and 1789 by the architect José Martín de Aldehuela . As early as 1572, a place for riding exercises was set up in the same place. At that time, so-called knightly games were in use and the games were considered a qualification for bullfighting . This practice area was founded by Philip II , who is considered the founder of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda . The Ronda arena was officially inaugurated in 1785 with a corrida in which Pedro Romero and Pepe Hillo performed.

architecture

The exterior view, partially stabilized and structured by buttresses , is otherwise unadorned and windowless. The sandstone arena has a diameter of 66 m and a capacity of around 6000 spectators.

Inside, two all-round balcony-like arcade galleries are arranged like floors ; Architecturally, they refer to the house fronts of older bullfighting areas lined with balconies (e.g. Plaza del Coso in Peñafiel ). At the same time, 136 Tuscan columns give the whole a stately palatial atmosphere. Each floor has five rows of seats, each raised by one step. Below the rows of seats, which cannot be seen by spectators, are the cages for the waiting bulls and horses. They are operated from above.

Museo Taurino

The bullfighting museum (Museo Taurino) is housed in another part of the arena . It provides an overview of the history of bullfighting. There are costumes of famous bullfighters, drawings, paintings and numerous original posters on display. Numerous historical firearms are exhibited in one hall. Next to the museum are the riding arena and stables of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda , which is dedicated to classic dressage riding .

Others

In Ronda, Pedro Romero (1754–1839) laid down the bullfighting rules that apply today.
