James McSherry

James McSherry (born July 29, 1776 in Littlestown , Adams County , Pennsylvania , †  February 3, 1849 there ) was an American politician . Between 1821 and 1823 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James McSherry attended Lancaster Academy and then worked in commerce. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1807 and 1812 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; in 1813 he was a member of the State Senate . During the British-American War he was one of the defenders of the city of Baltimore .

In the congressional election of 1820 , McSherry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of the state of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Thomas Grubb McCullough on March 4, 1821 . Since he was not confirmed in 1822, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1823 .

Between 1824 and 1830 and again from 1834 to 1835 McSherry was again a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. In 1837 and 1838 he took part as a delegate to a constitutional convention in his home state. Otherwise he continued to work in retail. He died on February 3, 1849 in his hometown of Littlestown.
