James Duncan (politician)

James Duncan (born 1756 in Philadelphia , Province of Pennsylvania , †  June 24, 1844 in Mercer County , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . In 1821 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Duncan attended the public schools in his home country and then Princeton College . He then held the office of prothonotary in Adams County , which corresponds to an administrative clerk in the district court. During the War of Independence he served as a lieutenant in the Continental Army under General Moses Hazen . Nothing is known about his activities in the following decades. He later became a member of the Democratic Republican Party .

In the 1820 congressional elections , Duncan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Andrew Boden on March 4, 1821 . He did not actually exercise this mandate, however, as he resigned it that same year and before the constituent session of the Congress . No information is available about the following years up to his death on June 24, 1844.
