George Denison

George Denison (born February 22, 1790 in Kingston , Luzerne County , Pennsylvania , †  August 20, 1831 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1823 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After graduating from Wilkes-Barre Academy , George Denison worked in retail. Between 1811 and 1814 he was employed as a clerk in the administration of the Wilkes-Barre parish council. After that he was a member of this body himself for many years. In 1823 and 1824 he served as its president. From 1812 to 1815 he was active in the administration of Luzerne County ( recorder and registrar ). After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1813, he began to work in this profession in Lucerne County. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1815 and 1816 .

In the congressional election of 1818 Denison was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the tenth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded William Wilson on March 4, 1819 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1823 . From 1821 he was chairman of the Committee for the Control of Expenditures of the Ministry of Post. In 1822 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Denison practiced as a lawyer again. In 1824 he was also the assistant prosecutor in Lucerne County; in 1827 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. He carried out this mandate until his death. He died on August 20, 1831 in Wilkes-Barre, where he was buried. His nephew Charles Denison (1818-1867) was also a member of Congress.
