Benjamin Ruggles

Benjamin Ruggles (born February 21, 1783 in Abington , Windham County , Connecticut , † September 2, 1857 in St. Clairsville , Ohio ) was an American politician for the Democratic Republican Party and after its fragmentation for the National Republican Party .

After completing his schooling, Ruggles studied law and was admitted to the bar. In 1807 he moved to Marietta , Ohio, and practiced as a lawyer there. From 1810 to 1815 he presided over the Court of Common Pleas for the Ohio Third District Court.

After that, Ruggles was elected to the US Senate . He served there for three terms until 1833. In 1832 he did not stand for re-election. In the presidential election in 1836 he was a member of the Whigs at the Electoral College . Then he worked again as a lawyer and in agriculture.
