Hans Emil Alexander Gaede (* 19th February 1852 in Kolberg , † 16th September 1916 in Freiburg ) was a Prussian general of the infantry in the First World War .

Life

Hans was the son of the Prussian major general Alexander Gaede (1813-1882) and his wife Emilie, née Franke (1825-1888). Gaede married Elisabeth Müller on January 26, 1883.

Gaede studied mathematics at the universities in Bonn and Berlin , was in 1869 a member of the Bonn Burschenschaft Frankonia , and entered on April 1, 1870 as an ensign in the Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm IV." (1 Pommersches) no. 2 of the Prussian Army one. He took part in the Franco-Prussian War and received the Iron Cross 2nd class.

On October 1, 1873, he was assigned to the War Academy and then from April 13, 1878, he was assigned to the state admission, from April 1, 1881 to the General Staff . On March 11, 1886, he became company commander in the 8th Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 70 . From October 1, 1887, he was assigned to the War Ministry and during his service there was aggregated to Infantry Regiment No. 70 on November 15, 1887, and placed à la suite of the regiment on March 22, 1888 . On September 23, 1892 he became commander of the 2nd Battalion in the 5th Baden Infantry Regiment No. 113 . From April 18, 1893, he was again assigned to the War Ministry, from July 25, 1893 he was entrusted with the management of a department head in the War Ministry and on May 14, 1894 he was head of department. On March 22, 1897, Gaede became the commandant of the Thorn Fortress and on December 17, 1898, the command of the infantry regiment "von Winterfeldt" (2nd Upper Silesian) No. 23 . Assigned to command the 84th Infantry Brigade on March 22, 1900 , he became its commander on April 18, 1900. His last post was from April 22, 1904, Commander of the 33rd Division . On 2 March 1907 he was awarded the Order of the Crown , First Class on his request, to the disposition provided.

When war broke out in 1914, living in Freiburg, he was reactivated and appointed as the commanding general of the Deputy General Command of the XIV Army Corps . After this was declared mobile on August 13, 1914 , Gaede was given the command in southern Upper Alsace. Here he had defensive battles in the following years, u. a. in the second battle at Mulhouse , Colmar and in the Münstertal against the French ( Armée d'Alsace ). Gaede became commander-in-chief of the army department named after him and received the order Pour le Mérite for his achievements during the defensive battles on August 25, 1915 . As a result of a serious illness, his mobilization provision was lifted on September 3, 1916 and he was retired. Gaede died shortly afterwards as a result of an operation.

Gaede's distrust of the Alsatian soldiers led to them being transferred from the western to the eastern front .

Works

Gaede wrote a. a. the war history study The Campaign around Freiburg 1644 and was involved in other writings. The University of Freiburg therefore awarded him an honorary doctorate in philosophy on December 25, 1915 .
