Benjamin Tappan (born May 25, 1773 in Northampton , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † April 20, 1857 in Steubenville , Ohio ) was a judge in Ohio and a Democratic politician who served in the Ohio Senate and in the US Senate .

Tappan was the second child and eldest son of Benjamin Tappan and his wife Sarah, a great-niece of Benjamin Franklin . His younger brothers Arthur and Lewis were abolitionists . He attended Northampton public schools and toured the West Indies in his youth . Tappan trained as a printer and engraver and studied painting with Gilbert Stuart . After graduating from law school, Tappan was in Hartford ( Connecticut admitted to practice). In 1799 he moved to the Connecticut Western Reserve and later founded the city of Ravenna .

In 1801 he married Nancy Wright. The marriage produced a son. From 1803 to 1804 he served in the Ohio Senate. In 1809 he moved to Steubenville, where he resumed his legal practice. After Tappan had served in the British-American War , he took on various activities as a judge, including as a district judge. After his wife died, he married Betsy Frazer in 1823. This marriage also produced a son.

In 1832 he was a member of the Electoral College ; the following year he was appointed judge at the federal district court for the Ohio district. Since the US Senate did not confirm his appointment, Tappan only held the office until May 29, 1834. He was elected to the US Senate in 1838, where he had a seat from 1839 to 1845. From 1842 to 1845 he was chairman of the Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expenses . In 1844, Tappan was reprimanded for improper behavior. He had disclosed to the New York Evening Post the contents of a secret message from President John Tyler detailing the terms of the annexation of Texas .
