The district municipality of Kretinga ( Kretingos rajono savivaldybė ) is one of the 60 self-governing municipalities , the second highest level of the administrative structure of Lithuania . It is only separated from the sea by the narrow strip of territory of the municipality of Palanga near the Baltic Sea coast north of the port city of Klaipėda and has 45,964 inhabitants and an area of ​​989 km².

Named after its municipality, it includes the two towns of Kretinga (21,460 inh.) And Salantai (1767 inh .), The two small towns ( miesteliai ) Darbėnai and Kartena and 196 villages.
