The road network in Romania

The road system in Romania distinguishes between the following types of roads:

  • Highways ( autostradă - pl. Autostrăzi ); Designation A on a green background with a single-digit number
  • Expressways ( drum rapid; drum expres ); Designation DX on a red background with number and possibly letters
  • National roads ( drum național - pl. Drumuri naționale ); Designation DN on a red background with number and possibly letters
  • County roads ( drum județean - pl. Drumuri județene ); Designation DJ on a blue background with a three-digit number and possibly letters
  • Municipal roads ( drum comunal - pl. Drumuri comunale ); Designation DC on a yellow background with a three-digit number and possibly letters

The motorways and national roads are managed by the Compania Națională de Autostrăzi și Drumuri Naționale din România (CNADNR), which reports to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

The Romanian toll sticker (rovinietă) is required for motorways and national roads.

Highways

Highway

At the end of 2015, the length of the motorway network was 710 kilometers. In Romania , motorways are routes that serve both high-speed long-distance traffic and international motor vehicle traffic. They are always set up with no-height nodes, separate entry and exit paths and separate directional lanes. Motorways are marked with a traffic sign and a number in the green field.

National roads

The national roads are a good 17,000 kilometers long. The streets with the numbers 1 to 7 (DN 1, DN 2, DN 3, DN 4, DN 5, DN 6, DN 7) radiate radially from the capital Bucharest . Junctions of these streets (ramificaţii) are marked with additional letters. Some of them are also used for heavy haulage. This also applies to the roads DN 12, DN 13, DN 15, DN 17, DN 19, DN 22, DN 24, DN 28, DN 66, DN 69, DN 76 and DN 79 (all at the same time European roads) and DN 18 The CB ring road runs around Bucharest. Numerous other national roads and junctions are not intended for heavy goods traffic, including the touristically important DN 67C ( Transalpina (Romania) ) and DN 7C ( Transfogarascher Hochstraße ).

Other roads

The district roads form a network of around 35,000 kilometers in length, the municipal roads around 30,000 kilometers. They are only partially attached.
