  • The Autostrada A3 ( Romanian for 'A3 Motorway'), also known as Autostrada Transilvania (Romanian for 'Transylvania Motorway '), is a future 588-kilometer motorway on the route Bucharest - Ploieşti - Braşov (Kronstadt) - Făgăraş (Fogarasch) - Sighișoara (Schäßburg) - Târgu Mureș (Neumarkt am Mieresch) - Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg) - Zalău (Zillenmarkt) - Oradea (Großwardein) - Borș leads through Transylvania to the Hungarian border and is supposed to connect to the Hungarian M4 motorway . It will also be connected to the future Terminal 2 of Bucharest-Otopeni Airport .

A vignette ( rovignetă ) must generally be purchased for the use of motorways and national roads .

    Construction progress

The complete completion should originally take place in 2014.

    Sections in Transylvania

For the 415 km long motorway section Brașov - Oradea (Borș), the construction contract was awarded directly by the Romanian government to the American company Bechtel in 2004 without having previously issued a tender. The construction costs were set at 2.2 billion euros and completion at the end of 2012. The first 42 km long section from Cluj-Napoca ( Gilău ) to Turda (Thorenburg) was opened on December 1, 2009. On November 13, 2010, the ten-kilometer extension from Turda to Câmpia Turzii was opened to traffic. Section 2B of the motorway is now complete. At the beginning of 2010 the work was almost completely stopped; According to the construction company, more than 200 million euros were not paid by the Romanian state. In addition, the focus of the investments was placed on the construction of Autobahn 1 between the Hungarian border and Sibiu, as EU funding is available for this.

After the price per kilometer continued to rise and the estimated total costs amounted to 9.9 billion euros and only 52 km of motorway for 1.4 billion euros had been completed in seven years , the Romanian state renegotiated the contract with Bechtel in 2011. As a result, Bechtel should only execute the sections between Nădășelu and Suplacu de Barcău and Suplacu de Barcău and the border with Hungary. Thus the project was reduced to 112 kilometers. The remaining piece between Cluj and Nădăşelu was re-tendered. It represents an important gap in traffic to the north-west. Construction should also start soon on the route from Turda to Târgu Mureș. Renewed contract negotiations between the state and Bechtel began in February 2013. On May 30, 2013, the Romanian government completely terminated the construction contract with Bechtel. For this she had to pay the US company compensation of around 37 million euros and settle her debts worth 50 million euros. According to the then Prime Minister Victor Ponta , there would no longer be any obligations and further plans for the completion of the sections could be undertaken. It is planned to implement the sections by awarding concessions or public-private partnerships to various construction companies.

Between Gilău and Nădășelu (Rohrfeld) an 8.7 kilometer long section of motorway was opened on September 28, 2018, so that the 'Cluj Belt' has now been completed with a delay of more than ten months due to a bridge over the Someșul Mic (Kleiner Somesch) and around 360 kilometers of the motorway still need to be completed.

On December 12, 2018, another 14-kilometer section of motorway between Târgu Mureș Airport and Iernut (Radnuten) was inaugurated. It was built by Strabag . This section should be connected to the A3 at Câmpia Turzii (Jerischmarkt) by three further sections , with completion expected in 2020. Another 5 kilometer long section of the A3 between Oradea (Greater Oradea ) and the Hungarian / Romanian border should also be opened to traffic in 2020. After the opening, this piece will represent the connection to the Hungarian M4 motorway .

    Bucharest - Ploieşti

The planned completion of the Bucharest - Ploieşti section was expected for December 2011. According to the then Prime Minister Emil Boc at the beginning of November 2011, this section should be put into operation in spring 2012 at the latest. However, after a long delay, this section was not opened until July 19, 2012, with the inner-city section up to Centura București not yet completed.

    Comarnic - Brașov

The route from Comarnic to Brașov will run along the localities of Sinaia, Bușteni, Predeal and Râșnov.

The tender should be prepared in 2012. Another call for tenders was launched in February 2013. The section is now being built under a concession . The contract should be signed before October 2013 so that construction work could start a month later. However, the deadline for submitting bids has been extended to December 9th. The award was made on December 19th. The consortium consisting of the construction companies Vinci , Strabag and Aktor was awarded the contract . The concession will run for 30 years. Construction should start in April 2014 and completion between 2016/2017. However, the concession contract has not yet been signed (as of January 2015) and construction is now to begin in October 2016. Not too much has changed since then. Only in mid-2020 proclaimed the Romanian Transport Minister Lucian Bode that he hopes that by the end of the year and the tender of the leg out that the EBRD is a guarantee for the construction of this highway.
