Autópálya M4 ( Hungarian for 'Motorway M4') is a motorway under construction or being planned in Hungary. It is part of the European routes 60 and 79 . After its complete completion, it will run in a west-east direction from the capital Budapest to the Romanian border and connect there to the A3 to Bucharest . The first kilometers run in the urban area of ​​Budapest and are run as an expressway. The tenders for the construction of the section from Püspökladány to Nagykereki were published on March 17, 2009. Parts of the M4 between Budapest and Szolnok are still signposted as national road 4.

In 2013, the expansion of the route between Abony - Fegyvernek with the M4 north bypass Szolnok began. The 29-kilometer construction site consists of three sections:

• between Abony and Tisza with 13.4 km of motorway,
• new Tisza bridge with a length of 2.3 km;
• from the Tisza Bridge to Fegyvernek with 13.2 km of motorway.

The Austrian construction group Strabag has won the tender for the construction of the third section of the Hungarian M4 motorway between Abony and Fegyvernek. The construction period lasts from 2013 to 2016. This section of the M4 motorway had to be stopped in April 2015 due to an antitrust review by the EU.
