The road begins in Budapest and leads in an east-northeast direction via Gödöllö , Hatvan , Gyöngyös , Füzesabony and Mezőkövesd to Emőd , until there largely parallel to the Autópálya M3 motorway ( European route 71 ), then turns north, crosses Miskolc and leads, at the same time, the European route 71 forming, parallel to the Hernád river past the town of Encs to the Hungarian-Slovakian border at Tornyosnémeti , where it merges into the Slovak Cesta I. triedy 17 to Košice (Kaschau, Hungarian Kassa ).

The total length of the road is 285 kilometers.
