Course of the road
|
Autópálya M15 ( Hungarian for 'M15 motorway') has been a four-lane motorway in Hungary since the end of 2019 . It connects the Hungarian with the Slovak motorway network.
course
The motorway branches off from the M1 motorway at Mosonmagyaróvár , which leads from Budapest to the Austrian border and then as the A4 to Vienna . It reaches the Slovakian border west of the village of Rajka and connects there with the Slovakian D2 motorway , which leads via Bratislava to the Czech border and further on as Dálnice 2 (D2) to Brno . Despite its short length of 15 kilometers, the M15 is an important transit connection. It is mainly used in travel between eastern Germany and Lake Balaton , but also by many trucks in international long-distance freight traffic between western Europe and south-eastern Europe , as many take the detour via the Czech Republic and Slovakia to avoid the higher motorway toll in Germany and Austria.
The M15 opened with two lanes on December 18, 2019, after having been in operation with one lane since 1998. The planning for the two-lane expansion should be fully completed by December 2014. The environmental impact assessment was legally binding since November 2014. The construction work is expected to be completed in early 2020. The opening took place ahead of schedule.
