Autópálya M8 ( Hungarian for 'motorway M8') is a motorway in Hungary that is planned in a west-east direction and is partly under construction and part of European route 66 . It begins in western Hungary on the border with Austria and leads east past Veszprém , Dunaújváros and ends at Szolnok . 10 km have already been completed, also other parts with two or four lanes, which are not yet signposted as M8.

In Austria it is continued in the planned S7 Fürstenfeld expressway towards Graz .

Motorway triangle M4 / M8

A motorway triangle between the M4 and the M8 is planned north of Szolnok . This triangle should be built from 2014. However, the tender was closed on February 26, 2014.

Section Körmend - Szentgotthárd

Autópálya M8 European route 66

The western section of the M8 motorway is in Vas County and will run from Körmend to the state border at Szentgotthárd . In 2006 three route variants were proposed. In 2012 the environmental impact assessment was completed and in February 2013 permission was given for a variant. The implementation plan started at the end of 2013. The entire 28.3 km long route should be built between 2014 and 2020. Initially, the section is to be designed as a four-lane expressway with two lanes in each direction and could in future be upgraded to a motorway and part of the M8. The longest valley crossing with a length of 575 m is to be built north of Vasszentmihály over Reinersdorfer Straße. The construction of a 200 m long bridge is planned over the Pinka and its Natura 2000 area. On October 25, 2017, the construction companies for the Körmend - Szentgotthárd junction were selected.

In the Horvátnádalja district of Körmend , single-family houses north of the Hungarian Western Railway are to be demolished and a 4 m high noise protection wall is to be erected.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the two-lane expansion of the M8 between the Körmend junction and Szentgotthárd was set on March 8, 2018.
