Austrian border crossings to neighboring countries
The border crossings between Austria and neighboring countries shaped life in many border regions. Since December 19, 2011, all of Austria's neighboring states have been part of the Schengen area . This means the elimination of identity checks at national borders. The Federal Police is responsible for tasks under the Border Control Act.
Historical connections
Above all, the Iron Curtain , which blocked the border crossings from Austria to the neighboring states to the east, slowed the economic development of the regions on both sides of the border. Due to the incorporation of Austria into the European internal market, respectively into the customs union, no more customs controls have been carried out at the border crossings to Germany and Italy since joining the EU in 1995. Austria joined the Schengen Agreement on April 28, 1995. The border controls in the direction of Germany and Italy were lifted on April 1, 1998. On May 1, 2004, the customs controls at the border crossings to the new member states of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia ceased to exist. On December 21, 2007, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia became part of the Schengen area, which meant the elimination of identity checks. The Switzerland was December 12, 2008, part of the Schengen area. However, since Switzerland has not entered into a customs union with the EU, goods controls at the border remain in place despite the abolition of identity controls. On special occasions such as For example , during the European Football Championship in 2008 , border controls at the Austrian national borders were temporarily reintroduced.
Due to the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015 , border controls were partially reintroduced in Austria. In addition, units of the Austrian Armed Forces were ordered to the border. The erection of a so-called “border fence”, a border fortification about 3.7 kilometers long and 2.5 meters high made of special wire mesh, took place at the Spielfeld border crossing from December 2015. This temporary Schengen suspension due to the crisis affects the border for months to Germany as well as selected border areas in the federal states of Burgenland, Styria and Carinthia. According to media reports from January 2016, an expansion of the controls to Tyrol (Brenner) is in preparation.
In principle, according to Article 22 of the Schengen Borders Code, border crossing at the internal EU borders of the Member States of the Schengen Agreement is permitted at any point, regardless of the nationality of the person concerned.
In contrast to the road crossings, some border stations are still of importance for cross-border rail traffic , because apart from Germany and Switzerland, the Austrian borders also form the borders of various traction current systems . Cross-border routes must be served with multi-system vehicles or a locomotive must be changed. Because of the language barrier, there is usually also a change of train crew.
List of border crossings
The following border crossings to neighboring countries existed or existed after the Second World War (all border crossings since the end of the monarchy are listed on the railway lines).
The border crossings are listed in the following order: from the Czech Republic - in the north - starting clockwise around Austria. At the Schengen internal borders, the places passable by motor vehicle are listed as well as some selected places passable by bicycle or on foot. The latter are not fully recorded, since internal Schengen borders can be crossed at any point, provided that other legal provisions (driving bans, violation of property rights, etc.) do not conflict with this.

Police Cooperation Centers
For cross-border cooperation and communication on security issues, the police, together with the police in the respective neighboring states, have set up so-called police cooperation centers near the border.
Temporary border controls
Just six months after the Schengen Agreement came into force, border controls were reactivated for the first time as a result of the European Football Championship.
These were carried out again from June 4 to 9, 2011 at the most important former border crossings on the occasion of the Vienna World Economic Forum . Since some of the buildings could no longer be used , temporary offices had to be set up, for example with containers .
Due to the refugee crisis , border controls were partially reintroduced from September 2015 in accordance with Article 23 of the Schengen Borders Code.
