The Grenztunnel Füssen is a 1284 meter long cross-border base tunnel between the German spa town of Füssen in the Bavarian district of Ostallgäu and the Austrian Vils in the Tyrolean district of Reutte , the eastern tube of which was completed in 1999. It passes  under the Falkensteinkamm under the Vilser Berg ( 1026  m above sea level ).

The tunnel currently consists of one tube with one lane for each direction. It mainly relieves the burden on Füssen's city center, which before its completion was heavily burdened with noise and exhaust fumes , especially from holiday travel in the direction of the Fernpass . In 2011, an average of 14,707 vehicles passed the tunnel per day, around 16% of which were trucks.

At the same time as the tunnel was being built, the expansion of federal motorway 7 was pushed ahead on the German side . Since September 2009 the A 7 has been leading to the tunnel portal near Füssen. The Fernpass road on the Austrian side is congested, especially during holiday traffic - especially on weekends - and leads to backlogs in the Füssen tunnel. To avoid standing traffic in the tunnel, traffic is handled in block processing. Block processing mainly affects traffic in the direction of the Fernpass.

construction

The Füssen tunnel was built between 1995 and 1999. On March 9, 1996, an unexpected water ingress occurred during the drive with an initial discharge of around 400 l / s. With extensive advance injection measures initiated immediately , the water inflow could be contained to such an extent that the Nothburga medicinal spring in the Bad Faulenbach health resort, which rises near the tunnel route, could not be endangered and the groundwater level in the nature-protected Faulenbach valley as a result of the construction work could be avoided. However, this meant that the ceremonial breakthrough of the tunnel did not take place until September 17, 1997, with a delay of around nine months compared to the original construction schedule.

The construction of a southern escape tunnel and the operational retrofitting to meet the current requirements of technical regulations were completed in April 2009.

In the course of the planned motorway from Ulm to Milan in the 1970s, the tunnel should have had a second tube. The planned transit highway has now been discarded. The second tube of the border tunnel is repeatedly called for in various on-site discussions. However, it seems unlikely that it will be realized, since Austria in particular is blocking itself with the reference to even more traffic. In addition, in the treaty of 1987 between Germany and Austria, only the construction of a tube was "expressly" agreed.
