Sopronkőhida ( German Steinambrückl ) is a place in the district of Sopron , which is located in Győr-Moson-Sopron County in northwestern Hungary . According to the census, the population in 2001 was 1,312.

location

The place is four kilometers north of Sopron , two kilometers west of Fertőrákos and a few kilometers south of the border with Austria , on the small river Rákos-patak .

administration

Since 2007 the localities of Sopronkőhida, Tómalom and Jánostelep have been an administrative unit.

Infrastructure

The prison of Sopronkőhida ( Hungarian Sopronkőhidai Fegyház és Börtön ), which was built in 1883, is of particular importance . Since the monarchy , the prison has been known in the past for the fact that political prisoners of various nationalities in particular were detained, tortured and executed there. For example, the Hungarian politician, journalist and resistance fighter Endre Bajcsy-Zsilinszky was hanged there on December 24, 1944 at the time of National Socialism . In recent years the prison has been modernized and expanded and is now one of the largest in Hungary. Today over 700 people are detained there and 250 people are employed in the prison.
